Altitude Angel's UTM Platform to Power Uspace4UAM Consortium Demonstrations across Europe

Written by Altitude Angel | Mar 24, 2021 1:00:00 PM

Bridging the gap between development and deployment, Uspace4UAM, a SESAR very large-scale demonstration project, will tackle issues of operational concepts, regulation, and standards, while building confidence in a safe and orderly integration of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in every day air traffic.

Uspace4UAM consortium brings together the full eco-system consisting of Honeywell as consortium lead, Air Navigation Services of the Czech Republic, Altitude Angel, Austro Control, CATEC,  CRIDA , DLR,  DroneHub,  ENAIRE,  Lilium, TECNALIA, UpVision, Vertical Aerospace. The project is receiving funding from the SESAR Joint Undertaking under the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation program.

Uspace4UAM will build on the CORUS project results and synergistically link up with the new CORUS-XUAM works through the Advisory Board. The project will study safety cases and their impact on system requirements and look at how regulation and standardisation can be set up to support innovators to build a sustainable business case while operating safely in a multi-modal transport network. A series of well defined, iterative and multi-national demonstrations, both with drones and UAM vehicles will be conducted. They will cover different use cases, including mixed operations, to allow the project to derive critical enablers for a wide set of UAM service applications that can be applied all over Europe. This project is set to deliver results that are of real interest to “early movers”, enabling them to bring a real market impact in the next few years. In order to prove that this will be achieved, and that indeed the project has laid a bridge between development and deployment, the project is set to deliver a number of commercial contracts for the provision of fully automated drone services, and present solutions to identified gaps towards fully autonomous Urban Air Taxi services.

“The Uspace4UAM project serves to bridge the gap between development and deployment of U-space capabilities and services thus ensuring a safe introduction of Urban Air Mobility in the European region,” said George Papageorgiou, Advanced Technology Europe Director at Honeywell Aerospace. “We are proud to be working alongside such an esteemed group of partners from the UAM sector on this project. We can only expect great results of this project, which will impact standards not only in Europe but also on a global scale.”

“Urban Air Mobility is going to be a critical part of our long-term roadmap to reduce the rising pressure on our transport infrastructure and to build transport capacity in the third dimension - the sky. It will also be more environmentally friendly and help to further reduce travel times, and congestion,” said Cengiz Ari, SESAR JU.” We are optimistic that this consortium will contribute to a positive development of the Urban Air Mobility industry in Europe.”

The Uspace4UAM project officially started in February 2021 and will end in December 2022, whereas the demonstrations will complete by Summer of 2022. The project includes three UAM and two Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) demonstrations. The UAM demonstrations will be on TECNALIA and Vertical platforms performed in Spain and UK whereas the simulated demonstrations will be on Honeywell UAM simulator across several cities. The UAV demonstrations will be performed by UpVision in the Czech Republic and Dronehub in Poland.

As the technology pillar of Europe’s Single European Sky (SES) initiative, the SESAR Joint Undertaking coordinates and concentrates all EU research and development activities in ATM, pooling a wealth of expertise to develop the new generation of ATM. Today, the SESAR Joint undertaking currently involves around 1,500 experts in Europe and beyond.

Altitude Angel

Altitude Angel is an award-winning provider of UTM (Unified Traffic Management) software, enabling those planning to operate, or develop UTM/U-Space solutions, to quickly integrate robust data and services with minimum effort.

From a consistent, well-documented and standards-based platform, drone manufacturers such as DJI and cutting-edge software developers around the world use our Developer Platform to obtain rich, relevant and local geofencing data, exchange and share flight plans, de-conflict their own flights in real-time and interface with national flight authorisation systems. A growing portfolio of enhanced capabilities help our customers to comply with current and future regulations and interface with changing national systems with only minimal effort.

Altitude Angel’s first party solutions also power some of the world’s leading ANSPs, aviation authorities and Enterprises, including LVNL (Netherlands) and Avinor (Norway), empowering them with new capabilities to safely manage and integrate drone traffic into national operations.

Today, Altitude Angel’s market-defining technology is providing a critical, enabling service on which the future of UTM, especially in controlled airspace, will be built across the globe.

By unlocking the potential of drones and helping national aviation authorities, ANSPs, developers and enterprise organisations, Altitude Angel is establishing new services to support the growth in the drone industry.

In 2021 Altitude Angel won a prestigious Air Traffic Management (ATM) Magazine Award in the ‘UTM Service Suppliers’ category, which recognises pioneering technologies and procedures developed by UTM service suppliers to advance safety and complex operations, for its Pop-Up UTM platform.  Read more about the awards here.

Altitude Angel was founded by Richard Parker in 2014 and is headquartered in Reading, UK.
